A long pier runs across the upper third of the frame, its row of slim pillars and arched spans reading as a dark silhouette against a pale, even grey sky. A small house with a dark pitched roof sits near the left end of the pier, and thin lamp posts line the deck.
The sea in the foreground is a long exposure, so the waves have softened into streaks of white mist that sweep toward the shore. A dark wet sand edge curves along the right and bottom, with deep grey shadows in the sand. The black and white photograph is calm, quiet and spare.
