A single fern frond crosses the frame from the lower left towards the right, its central stem curving gently upward. Each side is lined with deeply divided leaflets, and those nearest the stem are bright and sharply focused, so every serrated edge and vein can be seen.
The photograph is black and white. The frond is pale silver and almost glowing, set against a dark, soft-focus background of more fern fronds. The shallow depth of field keeps attention on the front leaflets, while the tips toward the right fade into grey and the background dissolves into deep shadow.
