About Smoke
A lit cigar rests on the rim of a dark metal ashtray in the lower third of the canvas, its pale ash tip catching a thin line of light. From the burning end a column of smoke rises and takes the form of a slender dancing woman, shown in profile with an arched back, one leg lifted and a length of drapery swirling around the hips. The figure is painted in silvery greys and cream, thin and translucent at the edges where it dissolves back into vapour.
The background moves from near-black at the top corners to a warm rust and amber glow behind the ashtray, so the smoke reads brightly against it. Brushwork is smooth and blended in the figure, with drier, scumbled paint in the red-brown haze. It is a quiet, theatrical piece that rewards a second look, since the dancer only appears once the eye follows the smoke upward.
Suits a dark or moody interior: a cigar lounge, home bar, snooker room or a study with timber panelling and leather seating. It works above a sideboard or drinks cabinet, paired with brass or bronze objects and low warm lamplight. The near-black background sits well on charcoal, deep green or exposed brick walls.
