About Smooth Sailing
A single sloop sails across the lower left of the canvas, heeling slightly to starboard. Two tall white sails, a jib and a mainsail, catch full light and are painted in soft creamy whites with faint grey shadows along the folds. The dark hull carries flecks of green, gold and black, with a short reflection trailing beneath it. Behind the boat a low coastline runs the width of the painting: rounded olive and brown headlands with pale green flats at the waterline, half dissolved in haze.
The water is deep cobalt, brushed in long horizontal strokes that lighten to lavender near the far shore, while the sky above fades from soft blue at the top to a pale grey band at the horizon. Brushwork is smooth and blended, with no heavy texture; edges of the hills are deliberately soft. The overall character is calm and still, a quiet summer day on sheltered water with the boat as the single bright accent.
Works in a living room or bedroom with white or pale grey walls, and suits coastal and Hamptons-style interiors. Hang above a linen sofa, a sideboard or a bedhead. Pairs with timber furniture, cane, navy cushions and simple white ceramics, and sits well near a window with natural light. Browse more seascape oil paintings, blue art, the Statton Collection.
