A large, twisted oak dominates the centre of this winter forest scene. Its thick trunk splits into heavy, bare limbs that reach out against a pale grey-cream sky with a faint pink smudge near the top. Snow rests on the lower branches and covers the open ground in the foreground.
The image reads as a textured oil-style painting, with loose, visible brushwork and a muted palette of sepia, umber, olive and cream. Thinner trees fade into a hazy brown background behind the oak, and a small dark shrub and stumps sit at the left of the clearing. Tiny dark marks in the snow suggest a bird at lower left.
