About Red Earth Divide
The square canvas is split roughly in half. The lower two thirds is a broad field of flat scarlet, thinned in places so faint green-grey drags show through near the bottom edge. Above it sits a heavy charcoal-blue mass with soft edges, overlapped by pale angular wedges of cream, butter yellow and grey along the left side. Fine incised lines loop across the dark area like drawn outlines, and a scraped white band with comb-like ridges runs along the join between dark and red.
In the upper right corner a curved orange-red shape and a slice of white break the darkness. Paint is applied in thin, brushed layers rather than thick impasto, with visible scrapes, dry-brush edges and drips where the red bleeds up into the grey. The painting reads as a landscape reduced to two masses: a hot red ground and a shadowed weight pressing down on it.
Suited to a living room with white or pale grey walls, above a low sideboard or a charcoal sofa where the red can carry the room. Works in an open-plan dining space, over a black timber table, or in a reception area. Pairs with dark metal frames, concrete, oak and plain linen cushions in cream or slate.
