About Snowfield at Golden Dusk
A row of six leafless trees stands along a low horizon that cuts the square canvas about two thirds of the way down. Their trunks and fine twig networks are painted in dark brown and near-black, thinned to a haze at the outer branches so the crowns dissolve into the background. Behind them the sky is a flat wash of ochre and warm gold, mottled with faint rust marks and soft vertical creases that read like aged paper or gold leaf. No sun, no cloud shapes, just graded warm light.
The lower third is snow, built up in thick pale blue and white paint with a gritty, stippled surface that catches real light and casts tiny shadows. Dark clumps of grass and shadow gather at the base of each trunk, anchoring the trees to the ground. The character of the piece is quiet and still: warm sky against cold ground, with texture doing most of the work.
Suits bedrooms, hallways and living rooms with warm neutral walls, oak or ash timber, linen and wool. The ochre background sits well with brass lamps and tan leather, while the pale blue snow band picks up grey-blue upholstery. Good above a low sideboard or bedhead where the textured snow catches side light. Browse more modern art, square paintings, all hand-painted oil paintings.
