About Lady with the Red Fan
A stylised woman fills the upper right of this square canvas, her face reduced to a pale oval with a single closed eye and a suggestion of a nose. A large open fan in scarlet and crimson rises in front of her, its pleats marked by straight ribs and decorated with fine white leaf and stem tracery. Above her head, spiky strokes of red, white and black fan out like feathers or hair ornaments. A second, smaller fan in pink and black cuts diagonally across the lower left.
The background is divided into flat vertical bands: a warm brushed red strip on the left edge, a broad black panel through the centre, and a red disc glowing behind the figure's head. Paint is applied in confident flat blocks with visible drag marks, and the white flourishes sit on top as quick, dry-brush flicks. The character is graphic and theatrical, closer to a poster design than a likeness, with the fan doing most of the talking.
Works in a dining room, entry hall or a lounge with black, charcoal or deep grey walls, where the red reads strongly. Pairs with lacquered timber, a black sideboard, brass lamps or a red-toned rug. In a square room, hang it as a single centred piece rather than in a group. Browse more modern art, square paintings, all hand-painted oil paintings.
