About Squares IV
Twenty-five squares sit in a five by five grid, each one a separate wash of charcoal ink that bleeds outward into soft, feathered edges. Some tiles read as dark bands with a pale stripe running through the centre; others are almost solid black, or fade to a smoky grey at one side. The squares are not perfectly aligned, so their corners overlap and step out of line, and the warm off-white paper shows between them as thin, irregular gaps.
The surface has the grain of watercolour paper, with tiny white flecks where the pigment skipped and darker pooling along the edges of each wash. The effect is quiet and rhythmic: a strict grid loosened by the way the ink spread on its own.
Works in a living room above a low sideboard, in a home office behind a desk, or in a bedroom over the bedhead. The monochrome palette suits pale walls, oak and rattan, linen bedding and black metal shelving, and it pairs neatly with a second square abstract for a balanced two-piece arrangement.
