A large rooster fills the square, seen side-on and walking left across a paddock. Its comb is red, its beak yellow, and its body shifts from pale gold on the chest to deep orange and rust across the wings. Loose dark strokes mark the feathers, and the long tail sweeps up and curls over at the right edge.
The background is a wash of blue, grey and violet that looks like a heavy sky, with dark green trees blurred along the horizon. The grass in front glows yellow-green, with a shadow of olive and brown under the bird's pink feet. Pigment pools and blooms in soft patches, which gives it a clear watercolour look.
