About Survival
The canvas is divided into blocks. A black vertical band runs down the left edge, broken by four cream-white squares set one above the other like stepping stones. To the right, a pale cream and putty field holds a slender silver tree that leans hard to the left, its thin branches sculpted in raised paint. Two horizontal gold-ochre bars cross the lower half, separated by a dark olive-black channel with a small curl of ochre. Below them sits a broad panel of rust red and burnt orange.
Texture does most of the work here: the surfaces are scraped, stippled and combed, and the tree forms stand proud of the canvas. A second gold twig rises through the red panel, bare and forked. The character is quiet and grounded, with earthy warmth set against black geometry.
Works in rooms with warm timber, leather or exposed brick: a lounge above a sideboard, a dining wall, or a hallway that needs a vertical focal point. The rust and gold sit well with tan furniture and jute rugs, while the black band ties in with dark metal lamps, iron frames and charcoal cushions.
