A brown and white cow fills the square frame, its head turned slightly to the right and its gaze meeting the viewer. The white blaze down the face is built from loose, feathery strokes of cream, pale blue and grey. Dark chocolate patches wrap around both eyes and spread across the neck and shoulder.
The background is a mottled wash of teal, turquoise and deep green with visible brushy texture, which makes the warm coat stand out. The pink-brown muzzle sits low in the frame, with soft shadow under the chin. Both ears are held out sideways in rust brown, and the right ear reaches almost to the edge. The look is of a textured painting with visible brushwork.
