A row of slender, dark brown trunks with reddish streaks stands across a square canvas, some leaning slightly and a few forking into thin branches. The trunks are drawn with dragged, scratchy strokes, so their edges look rough and uneven rather than smooth.
Above, the canopy is built from small square dabs of sage, olive, pale blue, teal and mustard yellow. Behind the trunks a pale, chalky white haze shows through, and below, a band of teal blends into a gold-ochre ground with flecks of orange. The impasto-style texture gives it an abstract, layered look.
