About The Lady Pianist
A young woman sits at an upright piano on the left of the canvas, seen from behind and slightly to the side, her long dark hair falling across her shoulders as she leans towards the open score on the music stand. Her right hand reaches down to the keys, which are laid in with short white and black strokes. The piano body is dark, worked in near-black, deep blue and plum, while the sheet music catches pink, mint and yellow light.
Her long white dress flares out across the lower right, built from thick ridges of paint with yellow, pink and pale violet running through the skirt. Behind her the background breaks into orange, scarlet and cream, applied in broad knife sweeps that fan outwards like sound. The character of the painting is movement: heavy impasto and loose colour give the figure a sense of being caught mid-phrase rather than posed.
Suits a music room, a piano corner or a formal dining room where the orange background can carry a wall on its own.
