About The Old Factory
A tilted off-white square sits just right of centre, its edges soft and chalky where the pale paint breaks over a thick copper-red ground. The lower two thirds of the canvas are worked into a dense crust of rust and burnt orange, scratched and combed so the surface reads like corroded metal. A small yellow block rests to the left of the square, and below it a patch of olive and near-black forms a dark pocket crossed by fine scored lines.
The upper band lightens into cream, mauve and pale grey, with looping gold lines drawn in raised relief that curl across the top like loose wire. Texture does most of the work here: trowelled ridges, granular build-up and thin metallic glazes that catch the light. The character is industrial and weathered, quiet rather than loud, with one clean bright shape holding the eye against all the rust.
Suits a lounge or hallway with timber, leather or exposed brick, and works against white, charcoal or clay-coloured walls. The copper and ochre tones pick up tan furniture, rattan and aged metal light fittings. Good above a sideboard or a low bookshelf where the raised gold lines and scratched surface can be seen up close. Browse more abstract oil paintings, the Statton Collection.
