About Through The Alleys
A narrow cobbled laneway runs from the foreground into the middle distance, curving left beneath a low stone archway. On the left stands a pale render and stone house with a rust-red shuttered window, a black wall lantern and a small hanging sign; climbing pink and white blossom spills over its upper wall. On the right a taller brick and stone building carries grey-lilac louvred shutters and a window box of red flowers. Stone planters, geraniums and clumps of white and pink blooms edge both kerbs under a violet and cloud-streaked sky.
The paving is built up in short, loaded strokes that catch light down the centre of the lane, while the flowers are dabbed on thickly with a small brush. The mood is quiet and mid-afternoon, an empty street with warm stone and cool shadow.
Suits hallways and entry walls where the receding lane draws the eye down a narrow space, and works well in dining rooms, guest bedrooms or a cafe fit-out. Pairs with timber furniture, rattan, terracotta pots, linen and warm white or sage walls, and sits comfortably beside other European village or Tuscan scenes.
