About Toast
A cropped close-up fills the canvas: a hand with thick cream-white fingers curls around the bowl of a wide, long-stemmed glass half filled with dark burgundy wine. The wine line sits flat and almost black where it meets the glass, with lighter red and ochre showing through the bowl. Behind it, a brick wall is built from short rectangular palette-knife strokes in scarlet, orange and rust, laid in rough courses. At right, the sleeve and shoulder of a white shirt or jacket catch the light in ribbed cream strokes beside a dark lapel.
The paint is applied in flat, blocky slabs with visible knife edges and ridges, so the surface reads as texture before it reads as detail. The mood is warm and celebratory, a single raised glass caught mid-toast.
Suits a dining room, bar area or wine cellar wall, and works well in a restaurant or cafe. The red brick tones sit comfortably against white or charcoal walls, timber tables and dark leather seating. Hang it above a sideboard with decanters and glassware, or pair it with a second warm-toned still life. Browse more all hand-painted oil paintings, How to care for an oil painting.
