About Towards the Light
A slim black ladder runs on a diagonal up the left of centre, its rungs drawn in quick uneven strokes so no two gaps match. Behind it the canvas is washed in periwinkle and lilac, brushed in long vertical sweeps with a pale, almost white column of light falling down the upper left. A teal green form rises from the lower edge like a sail, meeting a curved white and grey shape outlined in black. To the right a smaller leaf shape ends in a drawn spiral, and thin white ribbons curl across the lower half.
The paint is thinly laid and softly blended, with the drawn black lines and white ribbons sitting crisply on top. It reads as quiet and dreamlike rather than bold, a small set of symbols floating in coloured haze.
Suits a bedroom, a hallway or a reading corner where the light is soft. The periwinkle and lilac washes sit well against white, grey or pale timber walls, and pair with linen bedding, cane or light oak furniture and brushed silver fittings. The teal accent picks up well with green foliage or a single glazed pot. Browse more the Statton Collection, abstract oil paintings, purple and pink art.
