About Troubled
Vertical bands fill the canvas: a pale cream and apricot column on the left, a near-black column through the centre, and a broad field of burnt orange on the right curved by a sweeping arc of ochre and plum. Cutting across the lower third is a heavy horizontal ridge of white and grey paint, applied thickly so the crust stands off the surface and catches light. Below it the colours drop into deep maroon, charcoal and streaks of yellow that run down like weathered rust.
The mood is heavy and weathered rather than decorative, closer to a rusted wall or a scorched cliff face than to any object you can name.
Suits a lounge room with warm timber floors, leather seating or tan furniture, and works over a sideboard in a dining room with terracotta or clay-toned walls. The strong verticals suit a narrow hallway or stairwell wall. Pairs with brass lamps, woven rugs and off-white plaster finishes.
