About Universe in Red
A large circle sits almost centred on a square canvas of deep red. Inside it the paint lightens to chalky cream and dusty pink, with a bloom of grey-white through the middle and a warmer brown-ochre patch at the right edge. A thin orange line traces the outer ring, breaking and doubling back on itself, while a second looped line curls into a small oval low on the right. A single black stroke drops from the top of the canvas into the pale centre, thinning as it goes.
The surface is heavily worked, with fine crackle and grainy texture catching light across the red field. Its character is quiet and planetary rather than loud: one warm sphere, a few drawn lines, and a lot of red space around it. Signed lower right.
Works over a dark timber sideboard, a leather sofa or a bed with white linen, where the red reads as warmth rather than shock. Suits dining rooms with brass or copper light fittings, and pairs with cream walls, terracotta pots and jarrah or walnut furniture. The square format fits neatly between two windows or above a fireplace. Browse more red art, the Statton Collection.
