About Unsullied
Two white calla lilies rise on thick green stems against a deep maroon background that is almost black at the edges. The upper bloom tilts back and to the right, its furled spathe catching cool grey-lilac shadow inside the curl. The lower flower turns towards the viewer, opening around a short yellow spadix, with soft creamy folds ridged along the petal. The blooms are painted smoothly and carefully, with blended tonal shifts from white to pale green where the petal meets the stem.
Around the dark panel runs a wide olive and yellow-green border, scraped and stippled so the paint sits in a rough crust quite unlike the smooth flowers. A small red signature sits in the lower right of the border. The effect is a quiet, contained study: two simple flowers held in a dark window, with a weathered, plaster-like frame painted straight onto the canvas.
Suits a hallway, dining room or bedroom where a single upright picture works better than a wide one. The olive border settles well with timber furniture, linen, rattan and sage or cream walls, while the maroon centre picks up burgundy cushions or a dark sideboard. Good as a pair with a second upright floral. Browse more floral art, earthy tones, all hand-painted oil paintings.
