About Venice Twilight
A narrow Venetian canal runs from the lower right into the distance, spanned by a low terracotta-brown stone bridge. A black gondola with red cushions is moored against timber mooring poles, with a small white boat tucked under the arch further back. Along the left, a wet pavement reflects lilac, violet and cream light, and a couple in dark coats walk away from the viewer, arm in arm. A tall street lamp rises through the pale sky, and a window box of red flowers sits above a blue shutter.
Buildings in mint green, pale blue, cream and burnt orange crowd the far bank, their windows sketched in loose dabs. The water carries olive and grey-green reflections broken by short horizontal strokes. The surface texture is soft and layered, with visible directional marks in the pavement and sky, and a signature in dark paint at the lower right. The overall character is quiet and atmospheric: a damp, late-day Venice reduced to colour, reflection and two small figures.
Suits a bedroom, hallway or dining room where a calm, muted scene works better than bold colour. The cream, lilac and mint palette sits well with grey or white walls, linen bedheads, timber side tables and brass lamps. Hang it above a sideboard or bed, or pair it with other European city scenes in a stair gallery. Browse more blue art, brown and earthy art, or read Art above the bed: what size and how high.
