About Wallaces Hut

A small slab-timber hut sits slightly left of centre on a low rise of snow. Its walls are made of narrow vertical logs, weathered to silver-grey with streaks of brown, and a corrugated iron roof runs steeply down to the right, still holding a wide patch of snow and a rusted stovepipe on the far side. A tussock of green grass and bare earth shows where the snow has melted along the hut's footing.

Behind the hut, snow gums lean over the scene with pale twisting limbs and olive foliage, and a second roofline is just visible through the trees. The sky is a hard, cloudless blue that deepens towards the top of the frame. Low afternoon light rakes across the snow, throwing long soft shadows and picking out the grain in the timber.
