About Vintage Map II

A reproduction of an early world map fills the sheet, drawn in fine engraved lines on pale blue oceans crossed by radiating rhumb lines. A framed cartouche at the top centre carries the Latin heading TOTIVS ORBIS COGNITI VNIVERSALIS DESCRIPTIO above several lines of small italic text. Two circular polar hemispheres sit either side of it on a fawn ground. The Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia are outlined in orange, pink, green and yellow wash, with a long speculative southern landmass labelled Australis running along the lower edge.

A patterned border of red, orange and blue interlocking shapes frames the whole map, and small boxed notes in Latin script sit among the seas. The surface texture is flat and print-like, with the slight grain and aged paper tone of an old engraving. Its character is scholarly and quiet rather than decorative, an old view of the world before the coastlines were fully known.
