A saddled horse stands side-on in shallow water, head lowered to drink, its tail hanging long behind it. A small child in a wide-brimmed white hat and boots lies forward along the horse's back, arms reaching toward the neck as if resting or leaning down to the reins.
The photograph is black and white with a soft dark vignette around the edges. The ground is churned, cracked mud that fades to pale grey in the distance, while the water in front holds a faint reflection of the horse's legs. Tones are smooth and grainy, with the white saddle blanket and hat standing out.
