A tall white rooster fills the portrait frame, standing side-on with his head turned toward the right. His comb and wattle are a saturated red, and a small dark eye and short yellow beak give the face a sharp focal point against the pale body.
The body is built from loose watercolour washes in blue-grey, lilac and cream, with splatters and drips running down the page. Warm ochre, rust and plum bleed through the background, and faint grid lines suggest a wire pen. Orange legs and splayed toes stand on a dark ledge near the bottom.
