A black and white photograph taken close to a horse's head, tilted slightly toward the camera. The bridle and reins wrap around the muzzle, and fine whiskers and stray bits of hay catch the light across the nose. One dark eye looks out from beneath a ragged forelock, and the near ear points up and out to the right edge of the frame.
Behind the horse, a rider is cropped at the torso, wearing a worn, creased jacket and dark trousers. Loops of coiled rope hang over the saddle area and fall in the lower right. The focus is sharp on the face and soft on the background, and the bright, hazy sky at the left gives strong contrast against the dark coat and the grainy texture of the rope.
