About Golden Sash Figure
A curving brown silhouette runs top to bottom through the centre of the canvas, reading as the back and hip of a standing female figure, with no face or limbs described. The surrounding field is mottled ochre and gold, scraped and rubbed so the weave of the canvas shows through. Across the middle a broad red band carries a painted border pattern of orange diamonds, black zigzags, white chevrons and short blue cross marks. Three lines of white script-like marks sit in the upper half, unreadable as words.
Small squares of gold leaf catch the light beside the writing and below the red band. The effect is decorative and tribal in feel, quiet in tone but sharply divided by that one stripe of red.
The ochre, gold and rust palette suits warm interiors: tan leather, timber, rattan and terracotta tiles. It works in a bedroom above a bedhead, in a hallway, or in a dining room beside woven baskets and African or Moroccan textiles.
