About New York in Red
A wide panoramic view of New York harbour reduced to flat bands of colour. The upper two thirds are a saturated crimson sky, broken by a smudged violet and mauve band where the city sits on the horizon. Below that, short blocks of yellow, turquoise and orange stand in for lit buildings and piers. The white Statue of Liberty rises just right of centre on a pale plinth, the only detailed shape in the composition, with a small flare of yellow at the torch.
The foreground is a near-black plum water band, cut by horizontal white strokes that read as reflected light on the harbour. A small signature sits at the lower right. The character is bold and graphic: almost no detail, strong colour contrast, and a horizon that carries the entire scene.
The long panoramic shape suits a wall above a sofa, a sideboard or a bedhead, and works in hallways where a tall piece will not fit. The red and violet sit well with charcoal, grey or tan upholstery, black metal furniture and pale timber. Pair it with plain walls rather than patterned wallpaper.
