About City Lights at Dawn
A band of buildings runs across the middle of the canvas, painted as blocks and spires rather than drawn architecture. A domed tower sits left of centre, a taller pointed spire rises beside a burst of orange and yellow, and clustered high-rises crowd the right edge in deep cobalt and green. Small squares of yellow and pale gold stand in for lit windows. Above, the sky is a soft wash of cream and pale ochre with thin drips running down through it.
Below the skyline everything dissolves. Vertical strokes of blue, teal, rust and grey-green drag downward like a reflection broken by moving water, with bare canvas showing through in places. The paint is thin and scraped in the lower half, thicker and more broken around the buildings. The character is quiet and atmospheric, a city read at a distance rather than described in detail.
Suits a living room above a low sideboard, or a dining room with timber and grey linen. The cream sky keeps it light on a white or pale grey wall, while the cobalt and gold pick up navy cushions, brass lamps and blue-toned rugs. Works well in apartments and open-plan spaces needing width. Browse more modern art, multi-coloured art, all hand-painted oil paintings.
