About Desert River Currents
Bands of colour sweep diagonally across the upright canvas like water moving over a shallow riverbed. Ochre and tan dominate, cut through by long ribbons of white and soft grey and short flicks of bright orange. Two or three of the ribbons curl back on themselves into flattened spirals near the centre and upper middle, reading as eddies in a current. Darker brown pools sit at the lower right and mid left, with a small patch of dull teal at the top right corner and again at the bottom edge.
The paint is applied in dragged, loaded strokes that leave ridges and scraped edges, so the colours streak into one another rather than blend. It is a quiet, earthy abstract with just enough orange to keep it warm and awake.
Suits a hallway, dining room or bedroom where the walls are white, oatmeal or clay. The portrait shape works well above a console table, a chest of drawers or between two doorways.
