About Amsterdam Canals

A row of narrow Amsterdam canal houses fills the upper third of the frame, their stepped and bell gables leaning at slightly different angles. Facades shift from dark brick and charcoal to pale cream and grey, each punctuated by tall white-framed sash windows. Moored along the quay are long low houseboats, one painted bright yellow with a white cabin, another in dark green and red. Above the rooflines the sky is soft blue with thin cloud catching late light.

The lower two thirds is water, almost mirror-still at the centre and gently rippled near the bank, so the houses return as wavering vertical smears of blue, yellow and brown. The photograph is calm and orderly at the top, loose and abstract below, with crisp detail in the brickwork and window frames.
