This black and white photograph shows a dead, leafless tree lying low across an open grassland, its pale bleached branches fanning out in every direction. The trunk twists near the base and a broken limb stretches off to the right. The fine tips of the twigs are sharp against the bright sky behind them.
Above the flat horizon the sky fills most of the frame with heavy, lumpy cloud. Dark grey masses at the left and along the lower edge break up around brighter, glowing patches in the centre and upper right. The grass below is grey and textured, and the wide angle makes the branches loom large in the foreground.
