Five slender birch trunks rise from the bottom edge of a square watercolour and run out of the top, their bark streaked with short dark dashes. The trunks are cream and pale gold, shaded with blue-grey and amber along the lower sections. Thin bare branches in dark brown cross the upper corners and scatter across the sky.
Behind the trunks sit two clumps of soft, blotchy foliage in brown, slate and violet-grey, with fine grass-like marks over them. The sky is a warm ochre wash and the ground fades into a flat grey-blue. The paper texture and pooled pigment give the scene a damp, muted look. A red signature sits in the lower right corner.
