About Budgie on a Branch

A single budgerigar sits on a slim brown branch that crosses the lower third of the image, its pink feet curled over the stick. The head is pale cream at the crown, turning to bright yellow across the cheek and throat, with a small pink cere above the beak and a dark ring marking the eye. Rows of dark dashes speckle the neck. The back and folded wing run through olive to deep green, with grey and brown barring on the wing edge, and the long tail tapers to a blue-tinged tip.

The rest of the sheet is left white, apart from a loose grey-green wash drifting off to the right of the bird and a few scattered flecks of paint below the branch. Washes bleed softly into one another so edges stay wet and undefined, while the eye, beak and toes are drawn with finer, darker strokes. The character is quiet and observational: a small bird studied closely, with plenty of empty space around it.
