About Black Diva One
A single elongated female figure stands centred on a deep red field, her back to the viewer with hands resting on her hips. The body is painted in chalky white and pale blue-grey, outlined with thin black arms and a black shoulder line, with a small gold bead necklace at the nape. Her head is smooth and featureless, tilted slightly. She stands on a mound of ochre, orange and gold that curves across the lower quarter of the canvas, broken by flecks of darker rust.
Flanking the figure are two tall gold-bordered panels filled with raised script-like marks, each block ridged in thick paint so the gold catches light. The red background is worked in layers, darker at the corners and warmer behind the figure. The overall character is graphic and calm: a simple silhouette held between two columns of symbols, with texture doing most of the work.
Suits a red or neutral feature wall in a lounge, entry hall or dining room, and works above a dark timber sideboard or a black leather sofa. Pairs with brass or gold lamps, cream linen and Asian-inspired ceramics. In a bedroom it sits well above a low bedhead where the vertical format has room above it.
