About Blooming Blues II
A loose bouquet fills the upper two thirds of this square canvas, set against a mottled teal green ground that has been scraped and dragged so the weave of the canvas shows through. The blooms are built from thick white and pale lilac strokes, with several flowers ringed in cobalt and centred with a dark, almost black dot. Below them a narrow vertical vase is suggested in dark green and brown, standing on a band of blue that reads as a tabletop.
The left side of the background drops into near black, which pushes the flowers forward and makes the whites glow. Small flecks of white and ochre are scattered through that dark panel. It is a quiet, moody floral rather than a bright one, with the paint handled in flat slabs and short palette knife marks.
The deep teal and black ground suits a bedroom, dining room or hallway with white or grey walls, and holds its own against dark timber and navy upholstery. It pairs well with linen, brass lamps and indigo cushions. At 90 x 90cm it works above a sideboard; 60 x 60cm fits a narrow entry wall. Browse more floral art, the Statton Collection, green art.
