About Buddha Enlightenment
A seated Buddha fills the lower two thirds of this portrait composition, wrapped in a deep burgundy red robe that spreads into a wide, rounded base. The right hand is raised flat in the abhaya gesture, its pale cream tone the brightest point in the figure. The face is downcast and serene, features softened almost to a suggestion, with the topknot rising above. Faint leaf and circle motifs are worked through the red fabric, and the whole surface carries a scratched, aged finish.
Behind the figure the background shifts from mustard ochre to olive and dark brown, marked with fine scored lines and patches where the colour has been rubbed back. Clusters of cream, star-shaped flowers with narrow pointed petals arc across the upper corners and down the right edge, set against darker maroon foliage. The mood is quiet and grounded, more contemplative than decorative, with the weathered surface giving the image the look of an old wall fresco.
Suits a bedroom, meditation or yoga corner, treatment room or a quiet hallway. The deep red and ochre sit well with timber furniture, rattan, linen in oatmeal or clay, and brass or terracotta pieces. Works against white, warm grey or earthy clay walls, and pairs with plants and simple ceramic vessels. Browse more brown and earthy art, red art, or read Art above the bed: what size and how high.
