About Calm River II
A wide river winds from the lower left of the frame up towards the centre, its pale silver surface holding the reflection of a flat, overcast sky. Dark masses of reeds and low scrub line both banks, almost black in tone, broken by a narrow spit of land and a small side channel on the left. Behind them a low ridge of hills sits in grey haze, with a cluster of taller conifers rising on the right edge. The whole scene is softly blurred, with only faint streaks of cloud giving the sky any structure.
The character here is quiet and tonal rather than detailed, closer to a monochrome study of light on water than a sharp photograph. It reads as calm and slightly melancholic, with a wide range of greys between the black banks and the bright river.
Suits bedrooms, living rooms and home offices decorated in grey, white or charcoal, and works well in coastal or beach house interiors.
