About Checkers
A block of roughly cut squares sits centred on a flat olive-gold ground, arranged like a checkerboard about six squares across and five deep. Each square is laid on with a palette knife in thick, ridged strokes, so the edges stand proud of the canvas and catch light along their crests. Pale buttery gold alternates with warmer bronze and copper-brown tiles, and a few squares are broken or short, leaving the grid's outer edge ragged rather than ruled. The background is smooth by comparison, shading from deep olive at the corners to a lighter gold glow behind the grid.
The character here is quiet and tactile: a simple repeated shape carried entirely by relief and metallic warmth. It reads as one solid gold mass from across a room and breaks into individual knife marks up close.
Works above a sideboard in a formal dining room, in an entry hall, or over a bar in a games room where the gold picks up brass and amber glass. Suits dark timber, charcoal or deep green walls, leather seating and warm downlights angled to rake across the raised squares. Browse more contemporary art, gold art, square paintings.
