About Concealment
Two stylised faces overlap in the centre of this portrait-format canvas. One is a flat red mask in profile, tilted left, with a single almond eye outlined in gold and small red lips. Behind it a second, fuller face looks out, its cheek shaded in blue-grey and maroon, with a red-rimmed eye, a long gold-drawn nose and full red lips. A slender pale hand with long fingers rises from the lower edge and lifts the mask away. A gold rose hangs like an earring at the jaw.
Around the figures the background breaks into curved panels of rust, burnt orange, cobalt and dark umber, with gold line work drawing leaves, a scalloped band and a wandering zigzag. The paint sits in dry, slightly grainy layers so the canvas weave shows through, and the gold outlines are drawn thinly over the top. The mood is quiet and inward: a picture about masks and what sits behind them, held together by warm reds and a cool blue edge on the right.
Suits a living room or hallway with warm neutral, clay or charcoal walls, where the reds and golds can carry the space. Works above a dark timber sideboard, a leather armchair or a bed head, and pairs with brass lamps, woven baskets and plain linen rather than busy patterned furnishings.
