About Cycle and Bud
A single lily fills this tall, narrow composition, rising from a smooth pale stem at the base and opening into six long petals. Three point upward in a tight cone, while the others sweep out to the right and curl down at their tips. The petals read as soft ivory and near-white, shaded with faint grey where they fold, and they sit against a solid black field with no horizon, no vase and no second bloom. Fine stamens arch from the flower's centre, each ending in a small dark anther.
The mood is quiet and graphic. Light falls from the front, so the petal surfaces look velvety and slightly grainy, with the black ground reading as flat depth rather than shadow, giving the flower a cut-out, sculptural presence.
The tall, narrow shape suits a slim wall beside a bedroom door, a hallway run or the space between two windows. It works in monochrome and Scandinavian interiors, and sits well above a black-framed bedhead, a dark timber console or a white vanity.
