About Darkness Descends I
A square composition split by a low horizon. The upper two thirds are a soft grey blue sky, lighter near the top and thickening into banded cloud towards the middle, where a small patch of apricot and pale orange burns through like a sun breaking cover. Below the horizon a dark brown and charcoal landmass rises from pale, milky water, its edges smeared sideways. Streaks of cream and bone white catch across the wet surface, and the lower corners fall away into deep umber shadow.
The character is quiet and weather-worn rather than dramatic. Everything is blurred and horizontal, as if seen through sea mist, with the single warm glow holding the eye at the centre.
Suits a bedroom above a bed head, a living room above a low sideboard, or a home office where a calm focal point helps. It sits well with linen, wool throws, smoked oak and rattan, and with grey, putty or tan walls. The apricot glow lifts terracotta cushions and aged brass lamps.
