About Dawn Two
A wide boulevard opens down the centre of the canvas towards the Arc de Triomphe, which sits low on the horizon under a pale, thickly loaded sky. Haussmann-style buildings with mansard roofs and balconies line both sides, built up in short palette-knife strokes of grey, charcoal and white. A café awning and a striped umbrella crowd the right-hand footpath, with seated figures beneath a leafless tree dabbed in flecks of white. A couple walks towards the viewer down the wet, reflective pavement.
The whole scene is worked in black, white and grey only, so the interest comes from the ridged paint and the light bouncing off the damp road rather than from colour. It reads as a quiet, overcast morning.
Suits an office reception, a study or a hallway where a monochrome piece keeps the wall calm. Works against white, grey or charcoal paint, and sits well with black-framed photography, chrome or brushed-steel fittings, and dark timber desks. In a living room it pairs with grey upholstery and a monochrome rug. Browse more streetscapes, Paris art, square paintings.
