About Day Break
A cluster of tall stone buildings rises in the upper half of the canvas, their flat facades catching a warm cream-and-gold light while the shaded sides fall into brown and ochre. Steep roofs are painted in bright red tile, stacked at different heights with square towers and narrow chimneys between them. Behind the village a dark olive ridge runs across the canvas, and above it the sky is broken into bands of teal, orange and deep scarlet cloud. Lower cottages with red roofs sit in front, half-buried in scrub.
The foreground is worked in thick, loaded strokes of dark red, green and near-black, with bare twigs scratched in over the bushes. Paint is applied in broad blocks with a visible knife edge on the lit walls, so the light reads as slabs of colour rather than fine detail. The overall character is warm and heavy, a village seen at the first minutes of daylight with the sky still holding night colour.
Suits a lounge or dining room with warm neutrals, terracotta tiles or timber furniture, and works well above a sideboard or in a hallway that needs depth at the end of it.
