About Denial
A tall vertical composition is filled almost entirely with deep cobalt blue water. At the very top sits a narrow band of turquoise sky flecked with rust-orange marks, where a brown rowboat carries two small dark-clad figures with pale faces and black hats, one holding an oar. Below them a large sperm whale hangs head-up in the water, its body rendered in mottled silver, black and white with fine scratched line work. Streaks of ochre and pale blue run through the surrounding water.
The mood is quiet and slightly odd: the two passengers sit calmly, apparently unaware of the enormous animal directly beneath them. A trail of small white bubbles rising near the whale's tail adds the only movement in an otherwise still, weighty scene.
The narrow vertical shape suits a slim wall beside a doorway, a stairwell or the end of a hallway. The cobalt and silver work well in a beach house, a child's room or a home office with white or pale timber walls, and it pairs easily with rattan, navy textiles and brass fittings.
