A couple in evening dress embrace and dance on a timber jetty at the edge of a calm lake. She wears a long white gown with a dark bodice, and he wears a black suit and bow tie. To the left, a violinist in a dark suit plays with his bow raised. The figures stand in the left half of the scene.
Paper lanterns hang from leafy branches in the top left corner and glow warm yellow against a grey-blue dusk sky of broad, streaky clouds. A white rowing boat with an oar and draped cloth is tied to the jetty on the right. The still water reflects the lights and figures, and visible brushwork gives it the look of an oil-style painting.
