About Resting Spaniel
A springer spaniel fills the centre of the canvas, lying flat with its chin low and both front paws pushed forward into the foreground. The head is painted in cream and chestnut, with a broad white blaze running from the crown to the muzzle and a dark plum-coloured nose catching a small highlight. Long curled ears fall on either side in ribbons of copper, russet and gold, the brushstrokes following each wave of hair. The grey-blue eyes look straight out, rimmed with soft brown.
The background is not a room but blocks of scraped colour: pale yellow and putty across the top, cool blue-grey sweeping through the lower third where the dog rests. The paint is thicker on the ears and skull, thinner and squeegeed flat behind. It reads as a quiet, patient portrait, affectionate without being sentimental.
Suits a hallway, family room or a spot above a hall bench where the dog meets you at eye level. The cool blue base and warm ochre background sit well with pale timber, linen upholstery and white walls. Good above a low sideboard, or in a child's bedroom or a vet or grooming reception. My wife already had a couple of pieces of custom ordered paintings she had collected throughout the last few years and with your large selection to choose from she found the perfect complimentary piece to finish off her room.
