About Elephant in Africa

A large African elephant fills the upper two thirds of this portrait photograph, walking straight towards the camera on a flat, sun-bleached pan. Its hide is coated in pale dust, almost white across the forehead and ears, with deep wrinkles running down the trunk and creases folding around the front legs. Two short ivory tusks sit either side of the trunk. Behind and to the left, two plains zebras stand in sharp black and white stripes, small against the open ground.

The foreground is loose gravel and scattered white stones, broken by clumps of ochre and rust-coloured earth. Beyond the elephant the pan flattens into pale crust and a thin, hazy horizon under soft grey sky, so there is very little colour beyond sand, bone and dust. The mood is quiet and direct: a close, eye-level encounter with a very large animal, with the zebras adding scale and the only strong contrast in an otherwise muted scene.
