About Forest Night
The scene is painted entirely in greys, from near black in the foreground undergrowth to bright white on the snow-dusted foliage. Tall slender trunks rise through the left half, one leaning across the composition, with a pale track curving away beneath them. On the right, a stepped waterfall drops over dark rock ledges into a pool of mist and moving water. Behind it, a narrow river leads the eye back to a jagged mountain peak, with a soft round moon glowing just above the summit through a hazy sky.
brushwork ranges from fine dry-brush flecks on the leaves and snow to broad smudged strokes in the mist and sky, with thin white lines drawn down the falling water. The overall character is quiet and cool: a still night scene where the only real light comes from the moon and the pale water.
Suits a bedroom, hallway or living room with grey, white or timber walls, where its monochrome palette sits easily beside black-framed photography and charcoal drawings. Works well above a dark sofa, a slate fireplace or a linen bedhead, and pairs with matte black furniture, wool throws and simple metal lamps.
